Description: ABB Automation Technology has developed a product named Process Portal which is part of the ABB Industrial IT product family. Process portal provides a unified window interface to monitor, control and manage plant-wide information.
ABB is currently investigating how wireless communication can help to make it easier for operators working in a process industry.
Pocket Portal is an option to Process Portal. By using wireless communication it makes it possible for an operator to walk around the facility with a PDA and have contact with the control system. With the PDA the operator gets notified if there are new alarms, which he can acknowledge directly from the PDA. The operator can access objects in the process (eg valves, motors etc) for which he can get/set values and parameters.
One problem with a PDA is that it uses a small pen as input device. An operator out in the process may be busy with both hands, or has to take of his gloves for accessing the PDA with the pen.
In a pilot project the possibility to use wireless headsets for alarm notifications and subscription of parameter updates has been evaluated.
One way to make it easier for an operator would be to use the microphone on the headset to make inputs to the system.
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the possibility to use voice to control a process in a wireless environment.

The problem
The thesis can be divided into three parts
1.The lingvistic problem, i.e. how a robust and error free dialog with the system should be. In what way does a user want to interact with the system using the voice? For what operations is the voice desirable, and when is it not useful to have the option to make inputs with the voice?
2.A survey of what hard- and software exist today, i.e. headsets, wireless access points, speech recognition engines etc. Is there anything that needs to be developed by ABB?
3.Make prototypes for evaluation in a real environment.

Result
A report with the results from the work and the tests.
