Title: Multimedia Communication in Home Networks - Publish/subscribe model for real-time applications

Description: Home networks where different devices interact with each other are becoming quite common. In a few years' time, most home entertainment devices, such as TV
sets and VCRs, will be fully digital. Consequently, the concept of “one cable - one box” will be replaced with pictures and videos available where and when demanded in-home.

While in traditional computer world most of interaction is performed in client-server model, we believe that for video and audio streaming application in home networks, better solution for communication is publish/subscribe model. In such model a device, which acts as the publisher, makes some information available to the rest of devices (publishes), and has responsibility to update that information. Any other device that is interesting in that information has to subscribe to it in order to obtain it.

In this thesis, you are supposed to do the following:

  • Investigate whether publish/subscribe model is more suitable for audio/video communication in home networks (real-time applications) than traditional methods.
  • Investigate real-time aspects of publish/subscribe models (i.e., is it suitable for real-time and what support is given)
  • Evaluate different publish/subscribe models and pick one of them
  • Implement a prototype of a real-time publish/subscribe application.
