Title: Empirical Evaluation of Using Software Components in Windows CE

Description: The use of software component models has become popular during the last decade, in particular in the development of desktop and server-side software. The purpose of this project is to investigate the use of such models in real-time systems. More specifically, the use of several models with the operating system Windows CE should be investigated. Possible models to include in the investigation are the Koala component model, the Component Object Model (COM), and the .NET Compact Framework

The practical part of the project is to investigate commercial or open source implementations of the models experimentally, by implementing component-based applications with real-time characteristics. Measurements should be made to determine the component model’s effect on timing predictability and time/memory overheads. This will require implementation of non-component-based reference applications to obtain comparison measurements. One possible application to implement is a motor control loop, using a general PID-controller component and a component that simulates some equipment to be controlled, e.g. a DC motor.

The work will build on previous thesis project and have a stronger emphasis on systematic experimentation and collection of data.
