|Title:||Comparative Study of Web Application Development with SQL Server and Db4o|
Component based software engineering is a new trend in software development to accelerate development and reduce costs as existing components can be re-used from off-the-shelf. Software components that are already developed can be bought from different vendors, e.g. by downloading from a web store. Another alternative for application developers who wish to buy pre-made functionality is web services. This project focuses on the design and development of a prototype for a web store that provides functionality for customers to buy software components and access to web services.
There are different solutions for storing persistent data in web-based systems. It is most commonly done using some database management system (DBMS), and the most common type of systems is probably relational databases. An alternative solution is object-oriented databases. This thesis investigates the pros and cons of developing a web-based system with these two types of data storage solutions. A web-store, as described above, will be developed using ASP.NET technology and Microsoft SQL Server - a relational DBMS. It will then be reimplemented using instead the object-oriented DBMS db4o.
