Title: Telecom and Internet Service Mashups in Robotics: Architecture, Design and Prototyping

Description: Solution area Service Delivery and Provisioning (SA SD&P) is a part of Ericsson Business Unit Multimedia (BMUM), which provides the building blocks to make multimedia services available to everyone. SA SD&P supports communication providers to evolve service portfolios in line with changing business models and search for new revenue streams, as well as to deliver cost-efficiently.

The objective of this thesis is to develop an end-to-end demo application using high-level telecom APIs such as messaging, location and presence. The target hardware for the demo is a mobile phone and a Nao robot. The purpose of the prototype is to demonstrate usefulness of the online telecom APIs provided by Ericsson, that can run on any platform, including Nao robot.

The prototype shall consist of three parts:
  1. Mobile widget running on a phone, and developed with help of Widget SDK, e.g. Opera widget SDK.

  2. Application running on a Nao robot by Aldebaran Robotics (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2STTNYNF4lk), that runs Embedded Linux 32 bit processor with 256 MB RAM, 2 GM flash memory, WIFI, English speech synthesis. Programming languages that can be used for developing applications running on the robot are C, C++, URBI script, Python.

  3. Server-side application running on an application server such as Sun Glassfish, which communicates with the thin clients running on both mobile phone and robot.


The thesis work shall include:
  1. Definition of a number of use-cases for telecom services that run on the robot and mobile phone

  2. Architecture design

  3. Implementation of the use-cases

  4. Documentation
