Title: Live TV broadcasting via mobile devices
Subject: Computer Science
Level: Advanced
Description: LiveTVMobile is research project at Mšlardalen University, Sweden, supported by the industry. The goal of the project is to provide the technology for live video broadcasting via mobile phones. An event is recorded with cameras available on standard mobile phones, and broadcasted to the end-users for viewing on different devices, such as mobile phones, PDAs, PCs,etc. Along with the broadcasting, the system will provide the means to control the broadcast, e.g., to chose different camera angles, and to add various contents to the outgoing streams, e.g., commercials, before sending it to the users.

This thesis is a part of LiveTvMobile project. The task of the student is to 1) to get familiar with the existing parts of the project, 2) evaluate two different platforms, Symbian and Android, for recording and broadcasting of video from mobile phones, 3) chose one of them and implement a prototype for mobile phone video streaming to a video player embedded in a web browser. Furthermore, as a more theoretical part of the thesis, the student will study different delays in the delivery chain of the broadcasted video, identify their sources and propose methods to minimize the delays, and, hence, to increase the Quality-of-Service of the application in general.

The technologies that the student will be working with include C++/C#/Java programming languages, VLC/Darvin streaming servers, 3GPP/H.264 video codecs and Symbian/Android operating systems on various smartphones.
