Title: Force feedback and head tracking interaction in the industrial domain
Subject: Computer Science
Level: Advanced
Description: Thesis Background
Effective user interaction is very important in all kinds of software applications. In the industrial domain’s software applications, the interaction is quite conservative and the keyboard and mouse are the main interaction method used. Many new interaction possibilities are arising on the market, like 3D interaction and head tracking systems. This thesis will look into interaction devices that provide high-fidelity force feedback and head tracking possibilities and identify how they can be applied
within the ABB’s software domain.

Thesis Goal
The master thesis has as goal to explore the market for high-fidelity force feedback and head tracking devices that could be used for user interactions in software applications, and use suitable interaction technologies, for example Novint Falcon and Epoc Emotiv, apply them and show the usage in an industrial environment.
• The first part of the thesis is to scan the market for interaction high-fidelity force feedback and head tracking interaction devices.
• The second step is to identify how these interaction technologies would be used for one of ABB products used for quality control.
• The final part is to develop a concept demonstrator for ABB’s product used for quality control demonstrating the interaction possibilities.

Requested Competence
The thesis is suitable for 2 master thesis students with the following competence:
• M.Sc in Computer Science and interest in user-interaction and visualization.
• Knowledge in C# and/or C++ or other programming languages.
• Communication and presentation skills in English are essential.
• Independent, outgoing, ambitious, and goal-oriented are qualities we are looking for.
