Title: Data import/export between MySQL and Microsoft Office
Subject: Computer Science
Level: Advanced
Description: Many IDT web pages are built using PHP with data in MySQL databases. Examples include the page listing courses ( and the pages with information about thesis projects ( At the same time, the education administration makes extensive use of Microsoft Office documents for storing and transferring data. Two examples are Word documents for course syllabuses and Excel worksheets for course schedules. To avoid having to enter and update the same information in several places, a tool for import/export between databases and documents would be useful.

The tool should be implemented on the .NET platform using the standard class libraries for working with Microsoft Office documents. MySQL databases can be accessed through ADO.NET or LINQ. More precisely, the functionality should be implemented in one or more components, such that it can be made available to users as either an ASP.NET web application or as a native Windows application. It should furthermore be packaged as one or more web services that can be invoked from other web applications, including PHP applications.
