Title: Improving a Graphical Turntable Simulator

Description: The simulator mimics the behaviour of a turntable production cell consisting of a rotating table that transports the processed items between workstations (in this case, a drill and a test station). The purpose of the simulator is to allow testing of different implementations of the control system for the cell.

A first version of the simulator has been developed in previous student projects, focusing on the basic architecture and the communication between simulator and controller. The goal of this thesis is to improve three main aspects of the simulator:

  • Simulation details: Higher resolution and more realistic behaviour (e.g. moving parts should accelerate rather than directly get the speed decided by the motor actuator). Also, the system should keep some statistics on the number of items processed and how much time it required.

  • Detection of "dangerous situations": Detection of unwanted contact between objects (e.g. the drill and a item rotating on the table) and other unwanted situations (e.g., drilling an item when it is not properly clamped).

  • GUI: Improved user control of the simulator, and in particular much better graphical feedback.
