Title: Migrating process automation application to mobile devices

Description: Industrial control systems have been developed over years to improve productivity in plants and to enable easier maintenance. Today, the industrial process is being monitored by operators on big screens placed inside of a control room. In some industries, the plants are distributed over a large area, which makes maintaining the facility more difficult for the operators in situations when they need to get out of the control room and act in the field.
To improve the operatorís efficiency and usability of the control system, being able to act effortlessly in the field turns out to be a challenge. Currently, the operators overcome this issue by using remote desktop applications on their mobile devices, in order to access the system from any location. There is an obvious challenge in this approach. The system is not designed for small screen sizes, which leads to unsuitable presentation of the system interfaces on the mobile devices, resulting in difficult and time consuming navigation.

The purpose of thesis is to explore the problem space of this domain that is currently not well known for ABB and propose a solution that solves at least some of those problems.
This includes investigation of normal work routines for Operators, prioritization of system functionalities based on usefulness in the context, evaluation of pros and cons for system functionalities on a mobile device vs on the operator console in the control room and finally an implementation proposal for solution to a limited set of the problems found in the investigation.
