Title: Congestion Management at the Network Edge

Description: As interactive applications such as VoIP and high bandwidth applications such as video streaming in HD both increase in popularity, much more focus needs to be put on handling congestion in the network. To configure common queue management systems like for example RED can be complicated and time consuming, and a misconfiguration or an unmaintained configuration can lead to bad performance. Larger organizations can spend the time and money to implement and maintain a queue management system in their network, but smaller businesses and home users often lack both the means and knowledge to tackle this problem. Users in these smaller networks use a similar mix of interactive and bandwidth intensive applications and they too have demands on network performance that would require congestion management.
The problem of Bufferbloat has been know for a long time but has recently gained wider attention. Buffers are required at every network link to store packages that can not yet be put on that link. The main reason for these buffers is to handle large short lived bursts of traffic that quickly saturate the link. As the link-speeds have increased, so have the buffer-sizes. Without some sort of active queue management, these large buffers can lead to long packet delays, especially for TCP which relies on a timely notification of congestion in the network to regulate its send-rate.
Several solutions to these problems have been proposed with new active queue management techniques, among them CoDel and its variants. These new algorithms promise a good distribution of available resources to provide low latencies for all users and applications. All this with minimal or no configuration.
The goal of this thesis is to study the theory behind these solutions and and the problems they hope to solve and to perform tests to see if they prove useful.
