Title: Industrial control systems on multicore

Description: IEC 61131 and IEC 61499 are high-level, partly graphical, languages for development of industrial control systems. Application can be defined as a collection of interconnected function blocks that, in turn, can be defined by smaller function blocks or using an imperative programming language. In the domain of industrial control systems, as in many other domains, systems are becoming more and more computationally demanding, and one recent trend to meet this is to use multicore platforms. However, the existing high-level languages have limited support for multicore execution.

The goal of this thesis is to investigate the current state of multicore support in IEC 61131 and/or IEC 61499, and propose suggestions how it can be improved. The proposed approach should be implemented in a prototype and evaluated.

The project could be done either as an embedded systems or software engineering thesis project, focusing either on the runtime execution support or the design time language support.
