Title: Enabling Data Sharing with DDS On Real-time Constrained Industrial Robots

Description: Internet of Things (IoT) defines a dynamic global network infrastructure with self-configuring capabilities based on standard and interoperable communication protocols where physical and virtual “things” have identities, physical or virtual attributes, intelligent interfaces, and are seamlessly integrated into the information network. These connected “things” interact and communicate among themselves and with the environment by exchanging data and information, autonomously reacting to contexts. Consequently, new services and more intelligent services can be deployed by using sensors, software, and machine-to-machine coomunication and collaboration.

The term CloudRobotics was coined by James Kuffner from Google in 2010 and refers to a robot system where not all resources for computation etc are localized to the robot system, but some information is rather provided by remote data streams, e.g., from machine learning algorithms in a data center. This architecture has several potential benefits e.g., increasing robot intelligence, machine learning utilizing data from many robots, and real-time streaming analytics.

In the context of industrial automation and robotics we will investigate how capabilities of industrial robots can be augmented using cloud based resources. The thesis will investigate state-of-the-art in research in the field, develop new technologies and methods, and evaluate suggested solutions.

Purpose and expected outcome of the thesis include: (1) make a state-of-the-art report on research related to cloud robotics, see [1]; (2) Identify and describe a use-case that should be addressed using the technique; (3) Make an analysis of functional and non functional requirements, e.g., real-time requirements (4) Provide a solution for the selected use-case and make a prototype implementation. 5) Evaluate the solution and the prototype.
