  • [ 4 ] A very good course which resulted in a very nice experience, and tought me that it is important to relay on someone else for doing something crittical.. and that it is not going to bring the project down..
  • [ 5 ] was exciting
  • [ 5 ] Very interesting and instructive course. One very good moment was that we were able to choose which project we wanted to work with. Freedom of choice!
  • [ 4 ] Very interesting to be a part of a team creating a complex system.
  • [ 4 ] As the whole the course was very good.
  • [ 5 ] New challenge, new experiences like planning the project, working on it in a dynamic environement (like in the real project).
  • [ 4 ] The course was very good because of different concept than other courses.
  • [ 5 ] This was one of the finest courses i had in my cirruculam.
  • [ 5 ] Very demanding, but also interesting and very useful.
  • [ 5 ] I think that this course was very interactive and gave me a chance to know how distributed software development really works in practice.
  • [ 5 ] Things experienced on this course are one of the kind - a day in a life of the software engineer, and even more.
  • [ 5 ] DSD is best of the best.
2
The course has fulfilled my expectations (not at all=1, more than fulfilled=5)

  • [ 3 ] I expected more theory and getting knowledge from the professors.
  • [ 5 ] It did fulfill my expectations. I was expecting a different and real life experience.. and that's what i got! I also hoped to learn how multi-people projects function in real world.. and i learned that.. Also, it was just what I expected. Meet smart interesting people from the other side of the world, and work with them..
  • [ 5 ] I'm very interested in software development so this was exactly my type of course.
  • [ 4 ] Even more than fulfilled.
  • [ 4 ] Yes.
  • [ 5 ] I've learned some things that can't be learned only from books (without passing throught distributed project developing)
  • [ 3 ] The course fulfilled my expectation about learning new technologies but I never thought that it would take that much time.
  • [ 5 ] Yes it has dispelled my thoughts about Distributed software Development and i realized how tricky is the development of projects in distributed way.
  • [ 4 ] (I didn't really have any special expectations.)
  • [ 5 ] I have been given the chance to interact with different cultures while learning and working, which think was one of my greatest expectation.
  • [ 5 ] I got even more then I bargained for :-)
  • [ 5 ] The course was much more interesting than any other regular course.
3
The concept of the course with lectures and the projects was (bad=1, excellent=5)

    * * * * * * *
    0               3           5
  • [ 4 ] The only thing that lacks the course is more step by step lectures on management of the project. Being a project manager, at first I found myself overwhelmed with duties, information and all the things that i planned that had to be done..
  • [ 3 ] I don't know that the lectures gave so much in knowledge... But the conference hours on Thursdays was very good.
  • [ 3 ] it is really good.
  • [ 4 ] A 4 because maybe the lectures could be better, and more oriented to distributed developing and project leading.
  • [ 5 ] The lectures were good enough, i do feel the importance and application of lectures in my work and the starting lecture which gave us insight into the Croatian Culture was excellent.
  • [ 5 ] Lectures seem right to me. I wouldn't throw them out.
  • [ 5 ] I think it was great.
  • [ 5 ] Minimum amount of lectures (form which most of them come in pretty handy), and maximum very interesting projects.
  • [ 5 ] The best concept encountered. No further comments necessary.
4
The course administration (web page, support, information, etc.) was (bad=1, excellent=5)

    Average:   3.93
    * * * * * * *
    0               3           5
  • [ 3 ] Web page was pretty unorganized in the beginning. The information was in disorder and not organized. Promised tech support like cvs, web server, mailing lists.. were much delayed, and it affected planning at times, and also work.. Things should not be promised and then delayed..
  • [ 3 ] The whole FER website was not in english.
The "Black Beast" was very slow and also the CVS-server. Compared to MDH's server we thought he (The Black Beast) was in hibernation.
  • [ 3 ] The FER web site was quite slow, but otherwise it was good
  • [ 4 ] Very Good.
  • [ 4 ] In all, OK.
  • [ 5 ] The course administration was excellent but the prescence of Ivica in all lectures would be better appreciated.
  • [ 4 ] CVS server came late and had problems with incorrect dates and sometimes the permissions (that was the error message). Everything else regarding administration was impeccably correct, since we didn't notice any other issues.
  • [ 5 ] Sometimes the page was a little slow to respond, but over all it was fine.
  • [ 3 ] There were some problems with CVS, and there were almost-last-minute changes in project documentation deadlines.
  • [ 4 ] Except for the CVS everything was good
  • [ 4 ] There were some last minute changes in milestones/deadlines dates. :(

  • [ 4 ] I already said that I learned a lot. I learned to rely on other people, I learned how to say "do this".. I learned that flexibility is in letting people do work how they are most comfortable brings best results. I also learned patience, which my vice project manager tought me indirectly by insisting on detailed design before coding starts..
  • [ 5 ] more than i thought i would
  • [ 5 ] I have a lot of more knowledge in C#.
  • [ 4 ] i have learned new technologies, working in distributed environment and share information with each other.
  • [ 5 ] As I sad... I've learned some things that can't be learned only from books (without passing throught distributed project developing)
  • [ 5 ] I have learnt how difficult would it be when the geographies of group are different, but the development became less difficult as the time zones of sweden and Croatia are same. Had they been different like USA then it we would have been more difficult.
  • [ 4 ] Too many diverse things to count.
  • [ 5 ] How distributed software development takes place.
  • [ 5 ] I'm not talking just about core programming knowledge - I've seen another types of problem solving approach, honed some people skill, and learned a lot about leadership; good and bad
  • [ 5 ] Improved presentation skills, improved English language, improved team work and learned about distributed work (except all technologies).

  • [ 4 ] More lectures and more theory would make it better.
  • [ 4 ] Too much information in short time.. And then suddenly projects, which stress you with even new thoughts.. But generally good. Nice presentation of the materials, nice guest lecturers..
  • [ 3 ] The few we had in the beginnning was maybe not so neccessary... according to increasing the knowledge in DSD.
  • [ 3 ] i think there should be few more lectures and if possible some real project(s) should be discussed overall phases involved i.e. how they were done. in addition to information about the projects which companies did around the world e.g. IBM
  • [ 3 ] yes, it was good.
  • [ 3 ] I think there is more need to explain how to take the project in the right way (best practices, architecture design, project coordination)
  • [ 2 ] The lectures were very unconnected - too wide range of themes which doesn't teach us anything. Those kind of lectures only fills us with the information we don't understand.
  • [ 3 ] I consider the lectures to be important and relevant for the course.
  • [ 5 ] Nothing was missing there.
  • [ 4 ] Some of them were too... abstract.
  • [ 4 ] The lectures were really less interesting than project work.

  • [ 3 ] Interesting stuff, but too much ibm software related, also didn't understand a thing when they were talking about their tools. It was like throwing someone in the cockpit of a space shuttle and saying.. you're going to dock to international space station, and this is your radar, this is the flight stick, and this is throttle.. Just go there and dock.. but watch out for the 100 000 warning lights.. they will help you do it right.. it was generally.. what ? what is he doing now??
  • [ 6 ] I don't remember anything from that lecture, hehe
  • [ 3 ] Felt much like advertising their system, but the good part was their emphasis on iterating the process early and doing early testing and integration.
  • [ 3 ] Yes, it was really good.
  • [ 4 ] interesting topic, maybe need for more practic demonstrations
  • [ 1 ] Pretty boring lecture + lecture was something about we don't know anything so we just felt stupid there. It can be compared to starting reading a book from the middle - it makes no sense.
  • [ 5 ] They were simply excellent.
  • [ 5 ] Igor was perfect and Vlado was visibly anxious, but otherwise very good.
  • [ 5 ] gave us a valuable insight into Rational.
  • [ 4 ] What about the problems that emerge in test-driven development approach?
  • [ 4 ] They weren't so usefull for the project work since they have presented IBM technologies instead of MS technologies.

  • [ 4 ] Yes, It is was really good
  • [ 4 ] good presentation
  • [ 2 ] C/P from the 7th question comment.
  • [ 5 ] Excellent
  • [ 5 ] Nothing was missing there either.
  • [ 5 ] Was really informative.
  • [ 4 ] These tips/tricks are good to know.
  • [ 5 ] Really great insight to distributed projects!

  • [ 4 ] It was good. It was a new experience, and I learned never to trust Microsoft and the things they promise abou their technologies.. As powerful as they are, they will prove restrictive in the moment you expect least.
  • [ 5 ] Very nice that we could choose group and with that also team members with some limitations.
  • [ 4 ] tough and confusing but good experience
  • [ 5 ] Yes, It is very excellent.
  • [ 5 ] Heavy work, and it tooks a lot of time. But, it worths. The experience we in this course is priceless :)
  • [ 4 ] We did a lot of work and thought new technologies.
  • [ 5 ] Fairly good enough!!
  • [ 3 ] Our student project work was just OK. It shouldn't be any better (since we have other courses too) nor worse.
  • [ 5 ] Some projects were really complex and some of them rather simple, but overall they implementation was of great importance.
  • [ 3 ] I had a chance to experience both good and bad team leadership / project management together in a single team. It was both blessing, and curse in the same time.
  • [ 5 ] Simply the best thing in this course.

  • [ 5 ] Very good. They let us solve things and let each member go home knowing exactly what to do.
  • [ 5 ] Really neccessary.
  • [ 4 ] Good
  • [ 4 ] good
  • [ 5 ] Most important and till the date when DSD was not started, i used to think chat messengers to be utterly useless. I felt the need and their importance during the course. :-)
  • [ 3 ] Many times the meeting were terribly inefficient, but there always was full respect between ourselves.
  • [ 4 ] Maybe they aren't very constructive every time, but are useful for keeping the team alive and together.
  • [ 4 ] They were really useful, but there should be more space and time for group videoconferences.

  • [ 3 ] Advising was good, and people were there to help us, but technical support as i already said was.. poor. 3 because of support.. it really annoyed me.
  • [ 5 ] I have got all support I needed.
  • [ 4 ] It is good.
  • [ 4 ] good
  • [ 3 ] Project support staff was oftenly confused and didn't really knew what they want but finally we managed to agree. :)
  • [ 5 ] It was simply excellent thanks to my team members who were remarkably supportive during the whole project days.
  • [ 5 ] Nothing was missing here.
  • [ 4 ] It was OK.
  • [ 4 ] I expected a little bit more effort.

  • [ 5 ] Very good.. We had a little rough start.. it took time to get to know each other, and caution was much bigger in the beginning. Trying not to harm the relations by saying something reckless..
  • [ 3 ] My impression was that the FER students don't have the same motiviation and structure of how a group work works. Lack of respect to other team members in work effort.
  • [ 4 ] good
  • [ 5 ] Was excellent.
  • [ 3 ] Satisfying. We have kept respect to others. Yet, many times we haven't kept our too easily given promises. That could have been better.
  • [ 5 ] Great guys at FER
  • [ 3 ] Wrong people pulled the strings together. Besides that - a lot of co-operational potential.
  • [ 5 ] Just perfect.

  • [ 5 ] I have expected heavy workload, but not this heavy.. Much worries it gave me..
  • [ 5 ] at the beginning not so much, but later it was heavy
  • [ 5 ] Worked more than I should do...
  • [ 5 ] Mainly because of bad planning by other students and their late programming start.
  • [ 3 ] sometimes it felt too much but in the end i think it was normal
  • [ 5 ] As I sad... Heavy work, and it tooks a lot of time. But, it worths. The experience we in this course is priceless :) I would choose this course again!
  • [ 4 ] Fairly heavy.
  • [ 5 ] Workload was definitely too heavy for a course. I would have made better in other courses if this wasn't so demanding. Maybe I should have planned better. (But I tried hard with planning.)
  • [ 5 ] That was mainly because I am not experienced with advanced OOP so I had to try much much more. But I managed it (I think so at least :D) and I learned tons of stuff. Other people from my group worked much harder than I did.
  • [ 5 ] I don't complain about that one (sounds self - destructive, but I loved it :-), only about the way project management was done. Because of that seems like all hard work has gone with the wind.
  • [ 4 ] heavy enough
  • [ 5 ] Too much.

  • [ 5 ] Very good. Liked the teleconferences.. Very cool.. :)
  • [ 5 ] Got MS VS 2005 Pro from MDH, thanks!
  • [ 3 ] 3 because some problems with the cvs and other servers.
  • [ 5 ] Excellent not to mention some minor problems.
  • [ 5 ] Nothing was missing in this regard.
  • [ 3 ] The confrence system and room facilities were great. How ever the CVS software did not work from the mdh side that was a big problem for some of the students.
  • [ 4 ] It was all we needed. Problems with it are normal.
  • [ 4 ] Networks and software for distant communication still have some minor bugs.

  • [ 4 ] friendly atmosphere and professors tolerance against problems especially technical ones, and their flexibility.
  • [ 5 ] Building a project that is impossible to build alone.. learning that it is possible to work as a part of the machine and relay on someone else.. Like building a pyramid.. almost .. :) Feeling of "we the team" did this.. it's great.
  • [ 5 ] working on a project
  • [ 5 ] Working distributed in a group.
  • [ 5 ] Distance Conference, Meeting, Working... It's like a real world that I experienced for my future work
  • [ 4 ] The actual implementation of the project
  • [ 3 ] working in a distributed invirement.
  • [ 4 ] to learn C# and to work in distributed Enivronment.
  • [ 5 ] New challenge, new experiences like planning the project, working on it in a dynamic environement (like in the real project).
  • [ 3 ] Working with people from around the world.
  • [ 5 ] working with Croatians.
  • [ 5 ] I am kind of person who had real big stage frights. So this course hit me in the right spot, and it was tremendously useful for me - I don't have this frights anymore.
Working with foreign colleagues was pretty much fun also.
  • [ 5 ] The way it was organized.
  • [ 5 ] Communication with people from other country, of different culture, and working with guys of such quality and overall skills diversity.
  • [ 4 ] The project of course :)
  • [ 4 ] coordination between students and way of teaching
  • [ 5 ] Working with different cultures and with people which I didn't know before DSD.
  • [ 3 ] It´s an original and dynamical course.
    Cooperation with the remote side.
16
The following can be improved in the course:
  • Please put more lectures and more theory.
  • Maybe a little simpler projects.. Though.. I'm not sure if it would bring such satisfaction in the end.. if it wasn't for this workload.. I don't know.. Generally.. I'm happy I did this.. it's what I've been expecting from this university (fer) when i entered it.. and had to wait years to get it. Most the courses I had can be compared to this as useless and a nuisance.
But please.. be better with tech support in the future.. or say "no" in the beginning.. It's bad if people count on something if it never comes.. or gets delayed over and over..
  • cannot think of anything
  • Harder restriction of the education level of students. This is a D course which means that you should be able to develop advanced applications. The warning-mail in the beginning in the course is not enough. I know at least two MIMA students in this course that don't even can write a Hello-world program. Catastrophe!
  • There was no balance of the difficulty level of the projects. Some projects were simple like Student Companion, but some project were hard like Museum
  • Check that everyone realy fulfill the requirements to attend the course.
  • few projects require too much working hours it would be nice if the assigned projects are not that much huge so the teams may have time for rest and dont spend the whole semester in pressure and tension.
  • To balance the teams in good way.
  • Equipment to work on distance (CVS and other servers...)
Lectures... as I sad in question no 6.
  • It would be good to ask someone to give a lecture about a technology that we could make use of in the projects.
  • It will be better the team memeber have mostly same level and kind od knowladge, But it was good exprience specailly for the one who has't had exprince about distributed work before!
  • I dont have any special ideas.
  • CVS server, definitely. Nothing else has to be improved.
  • The course is perfect in its own way. However a prior evaluation of the students skills before they are alloted projects would help.
  • Do not allow people that know nothing of programming at all in this course because they are a major dropback for the whole team. This applies for MDH only...
  • Not much to improve. Keep up with that amount of lectures focused on team development, and give people bunch of interesting projects. Perhaps to avoid double CourseBuilder-like projects - nothing wrong with them, just for the next time, to benefit from project diversity.
  • not lectures on thursday since wednesday night is free on Pluto! (local disco in västeras) :)
  • There could be more hours reserved for videoconferences between MdH and FER. Some lectures could be more about technologies used for the projects or just experiences from the previous DSD generation students.
