General

The graduate education at IDE is carried out as part of the research at the department, which is organized under Mälardalen Real-Time Research Centre (MRTC). We offer graduate education in a wide range of topics, from sensors, digital filters, control theory, computer architecture, real-time systems, and system-on-chip applications to industrial information technology and computer science, and ranging from academically oriented research to applied, problem-solving oriented research in close collaboration with industry.

Our graduate students come in many variations: as "regular" PhD students with "doktorandtjänst", as teachers (adjunkt) with part time graduate education, and as "industrial PhD students" who typically are employed by some company or research institute and are allowed to do part-time graduate education as part of their job, in cooperation with a research group at IDE, which also provides academic supervision.

We participate in two national graduate education networks/research schools: ARTES network for real-time research and graduate education in Sweden, and the National Graduate School in Computer Science. We are currently launching, as a local initiative, the Licentiate School. This is an industrially oriented specialist education, where the graduate student is employed by a company and studies towards a licentiate degree at IDE.

We formally have two subject of research ("forskarutbildningsämnen"), computer science and engineering and electronics.

The Syllabus for Graduate Education in Computer Science and Engineering defines the area of graduate education in computer science and engineering, and the formal requirements on how to enter and exit the program. A corresponding document for graduate education in electronics will be put here soon.

The Director of Graduate Studies at IDE is, since 2005-01-01, Jan Gustafsson.

Templates and Forms

Templates for individual study plan at MdH and form for application to graduate studies at MdH can be downloaded from this page, provided by the central administration at MdH for graduate education. Currently it also contains forms for: reporting PhD courses, application for Licentiate seminar and PhD defence, and protocols for these.

(Note that these links are language-sensitive: set the language in your browser to Swedish or English to get the corresponding versions of the forms. If your browser does not support different languages then you're out of luck. Also, regretfully, the only write- and saveable format they provide is MS Word. Earlier there was a html version of the template for the individual study plan, which is a strongly preferred format as it is more platform-independent and simplifies the browsing of study plans. Html documents can be edited by Netscape Composer.)

If you transfer from another programme, don't forget to quit the old programme. Things to know when filling in the form: the name of our subject of study (forskarutbildningsämne) is either

See also central info how to enter graduate studies at MdH (language-sensitive)

If you want to quit the programme prematurely, then please use this form. (pdf, MS Word, both in Swedish)

Email templates for announcing PhD defenses and Licentiate seminars (plain text format).

Here is a LaTeX template for theses at Mälardalen University (version 2004-04-07, gzipped tar archive, if you're on a Windows machine then use winzip to unpack. Instructions how to use the template are found here. The previous version of the template is here. We do not take any responsibility for possible bugs in this template, bug reports are however welcome.)
