PhD Student Salaries

"Doktorandstegen", current version:

• Step A (starting salary): 16500 - 18000 kr/month
• Step B (>= 30%): 17700 - 19200 kr/month
• Step C (>= 50%): 19900 - 20600 kr/month
• Step D (>= 80%): 20900 - 21600 kr/month

Our guidelines say this:

Salaries for "doktorandtjänst" will be connected directly to the achieved milestones. Presently these three steps are used by IDt:

• 30% of Ph.D = approved Lic proposal, or equivalent (Year 2)
• 50% of Ph.D = approved Lic thesis, or equivalent (Year 3)
• 80% of Ph.D = approved Ph.D proposal (Year 4)

At the meeting we decided this:

• use this system consequently. This means we should start having thesis proposals as regular checkpoints. Info about proposals can be found here.
• Normal case: put the student at the upper limit for respective step. (Thus no individual salary setting within steps, all get max.)
• However, a student who comes in with some particular experience (like industrial experience) will be put 1000 kr above the "stege" through all the steps. (If there is a good motivation one can go outside doktorandstegen.)
• Students preparing for PhD studies, who have a temporary "forskningsingenjör" postion, are given a salary slightly less than the level A salary in doktorandstegen (so they will have an incentive to enter PhD studies).
