Title: Real-time Chip Image/Video Acquisition System for Machining process
Subject: Computer science, Embedded systems, Robotics, Software engineering
Level: Basic, Advanced
Description:

Background: Machining is a process of removing metals from a workpiece to give it specific shape and geometries, metal is removed in the form of chips of various shapes and sizes from the workpiece. By observing the chip properties, quality of machining operation and insert quality at the time of machining can be determined. Different machining parameters result in a different kind of chips formation. Observing the properties of the chip helps in recommending optimum machining parameter for given cutting insert tool and metallic workpiece.
To find the optimum machining parameter chip needed to be inspected visually using its images.

Scope: The scope of this thesis project to set up and propose a “Real-time Image Acquisition System” which should be able to capture the formation of chips and takes it images and/or videos and store it in the cloud through IoT systems.

Goal: Investigate the different camera and its setup inside the machine and its integration with IoT systems.

Task Description
• Explore the best method to capture the image/Video of the chip in the air.
• Propose and design a method to collect a chip formed while machining process.
• Design frame and mounts to secure camera at a location providing a clear view of collected chip.
• Create the data pipeline of image/video to dump the image/video stream in Cloud or Database for further analytics.
