Title: Evaluating the impact of different TSN traffic configurations on the real-time control of a Furuta inverted pendulum
Subject: Computer network engineering, Distributed systems
Level: Advanced
Description:

Within the context of the Mälardalen University Automation Research Center (MARC) research profile, a use case is set up to support research related to digital infrastructure and the computing continuum. In this thesis, the Furuta pendulum (Quanser QUBE Servo with inverted pendulum module) is used as a representative cyber-physical system to evaluate Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) communication.

The system consists of distributed nodes for control and image processing, communicating with the pendulum setup. Different TSN configurations will be explored to determine which can meet the latency and jitter requirements imposed by real-time pendulum stabilization. In particular, the thesis will focus on comparing three classes of TSN traffic:

  • Scheduled traffic
  • Audio-Video Bridging (AVB) traffic
  • Best-Effort traffic

The stability and performance of the pendulum control will be evaluated under each configuration, with emphasis on how well the communication guarantees (or fails to guarantee) timely and predictable data delivery.

Start date: 2026-01-29
End date: 2026-06-26
Prerequisites:
  • Networking and real-time communication basics
  • Preferably, knowledge of TSN concepts and Linux networking.
  • Basic understanding of control systems is helpful for interpreting results
