Title: Technologies and evaluation metrics for on-board over the air (OTA) control
Subject: Computer network engineering, Computer science, Embedded systems, Robotics, Software engineering, Dependable Aeronautics and aerospace
Level: Advanced
Description: Given harsh environmental conditions and specifics of machines constructions, machine operators may require having over the air (OTA) control for some of machine functionalities. To introduce such remote controllability functionality, an investigation regarding possible technologies to apply and corresponding metrics to evaluate them, needs to be conducted. A concrete example of a machine functionality (to be controlled OTA) with a set of high-level requirements is provided by VCE.

The expected outcome is a survey regarding suitable wireless communication technologies, derivation of their evaluation metrics and conducting the evaluation itself theoretically or if time allows, practically with a lab equipment (not on the real machines). The work will contribute to introducing new controllability functionalities at VCE machines.

Requirements:
1) One master student;
2) 30 credits thesis;
3) Knowledge of embedded systems and communication technologies.

Provided by Volvo Construction Equipment (VCE):
1) Availability of the industrial supervisor for a weekly meeting with the student;
2) Machine function description as the use-case;
3) High-level requirements for the function functional and non-functional.
4) Equipment if the implementation included in the work.
