Title: Wi-Fi Network Simulator
Subject: Computer network engineering, Computer science, Embedded systems
Level: Advanced
Description: This thesis focuses on network modelling of wireless networks with Wi-Fi and IEEE 802.15.4 technologies. The goal of the project is to upgrade the existing framework for sensors network simulation to include Wi-Fi networks. As we would, in the coming years, proliferation of IoT is exponential from smart TVs to smart Watches. Each device is unique and also performs completely different tasks with specific applications. For example, Smart TV has high bandwidth applications and Smart watches have high reliability applications. Given their hybrid applications, they also need different communication technologies (There is no unisize technology to fit them all). And so, futuristic IoT systems will have different communication technologies communicating in the same radio frequencies, 2.4 GHz to be precise. We need a network manager to manage all these devices uniformly. The network manager can use Software Defined Networking (SDN) technologies to flexibly accommodate any kind of communication technology.

So, the fun part, here, we’re going to do is integrate Wi-Fi technology into a network simulator for sensor network. This aids in the overall process of network modelling and management. This work involves exploration and understanding of different communication technology implementations in real-time OSes and Linux. With this understanding, we are going to integrate the Wi-Fi MAC implementation of Linux in Contiki OS. The effect will be radio coexistence, we can measure the radio interference from each device playing with different technologies.
