Title: Performance study of different OPC UA solutions over EthernetPerformance study of different OPC UA solutions over Ethernet
Subject: Computer science, Embedded systems
Level: Advanced
Description: During industrialization of factories the network solutions from Information Technology (IT) started to be adapted and used in Operation Technology (OT) where field-level devices are functioning. For example, PROFINET and EtherCAT, which are Ethernet-based networking technologies with real-time capabilities, stem from switched Ethernet in IT to be used in field-level automation. However, as the concepts of smart factories and Industry 4.0 emerges, utilization of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technologies are becoming prominent solutions. IIoT still has several limitations to be used in industry, among many, an important one is the support for interoperability. To solve this limitation, OPC UA has been developed, which is an open source application layer protocol, to provide secure information exchange between factory machines, and between machines and systems in a factory. OPC UA is a high-layer communication protocol that can sit over any Ethernet-based network, e.g., on common switched Ethernet and Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN). Since OPC UA does not provide any real-time guarantee, a new version of that has been recently developed, known as OPC UA PubSub that can support some level of guarantee in the information exchange.

The idea of this thesis is to investigate the functionality of OPC UA and OPC UA PubSub over normal Ethernet and TSN networks. The experimental setup should be implemented and a set of measurements are required to achieve such goal.

Steps:
1- Study required background on OPC UA, OPC UA PubSub, TSN
2- Investigate the related work on the similar studies
3- Setup an experimental network with setting up the network (both normal Ethernet and TSN) and install OPC UA protocols
4- Perform a set of experiments
5- Write a thesis report based on the results
