Title: An Automated Framework for Quality Assessment of Academic Research Activities
Subject: Computer science, Software engineering
Level: Advanced
Description: Research activities play a key role while assessing the quality of educational institutes. Usually, the evaluation of research quality is performed through traditional parameters like quantity of published articles, number of funded projects and so forth. However, other significant parameters such as quality and relevance of publication venues, projects success and research collaboration are usually harder to assess and thereby not always considered. In addition to this, there exist several theoretical frameworks (e.g. given by research funders such the Swedish Research Council etc.) where guidelines are provided, but quality assessment needs to be performed manually. Therefore, there is a need of a framework that is able not only cater overlooked quality-related parameters, but that also automates the assessment process.
In this thesis, a framework to evaluate the quality of research activities in universities will be proposed. More specifically, the focus will be on the selection and use of advanced quality parameters to ensure a reliable assessment. A prototype implementation will be performed in Java / Python to automate the quality assessment process. Finally, for demonstration purposes, the proposed framework will be applied to Mälardalen university to assess the research quality during last 2-3 years. The following activities will be performed during thesis:

1) Literature review
2) Identification of evaluation parameters
3) Theoretical framework including design of prediction algorithm
4) Prototype implementation
5) Data gathering (MDH) and pre-processing
6) Testing and improvements
7) Thesis report writing
