Title: Greener Project: Investigation of energy management for future electrified construction sites in the purview of Microgrid implementation.
Subject: Software engineering
Level: Advanced
Description:

Providing optimized power and energy at construction site is a key factor when it comes to increasing customer value for future construction industry. Customers at future fully electrified construction site shall employ several electric construction machines which would require an expanded electrical infrastructure. However, traditional electric power grid solutions have limitations about flexible power supply and control including huge investments and we can expect some challenges in providing additional power in the upcoming electrification of construction sites.
The above problem can be solved through the implementation of microgrids at remote sites (e.g. stone quarries) which can theoretically provide a promising solution to reconstruct the current energy infrastructure and ensure the reliability of energy supply at construction sites. It in this context that the project aims to further investigate the energy management issues pertaining to the implementation of AC versus DC microgrid at construction sites. Many research in the microgrid area mainly focus on renewable resources as distributed generation from a power company perspective. It can be interesting to look into the control and management of renewable power generation along with energy storage in a microgrid where dynamic electrical loads shall be used in many complex ways such as fast-charging of construction machines in electric construction site.
